Kenneth I. Hughes, K-12 Principal
{Mr. Hughes} Greetings friends of ELCS! Thank you very much for taking the time to learn more about the Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School District. Our K-12 school, located equidistant between Lake Champlain and the Adirondack High Peaks Wilderness provides wonderful opportunities for all of our students to excel in a variety of ways, be they academic, athletic or via extra-curricular endeavors. For the 2010-2011 school year, my main focus will be to work with and encourage staff at all levels to engage 21st century pedagogy into their daily lessons. We have begun this endeavor through on-line curriculum mapping at every grade level. It is a multi-year process which I believe will strengthen our school's curriculum to meet the rigors of future New York State assessments. We must have a strong, vibrant curriculum, aligned to New York State Learning Standards, that meets and exceeds what is required of our students. We also will be working to develop a Response to Intervention plan at our K-4 grade levels to minimize referrals to Special Education and maximize opportunities to provide tiered assistance to those students who find themselves needing additional assistance in the area of reading. A federal mandate goes into effect July of 2011. We want to be ahead of the curve when it comes to meeting this requirement. Overall, I feel that our school is in great shape! Early indications lead me to believe that ELCS will have a strong school report card for the 2009-2010 school year, something for which I'm extremely proud. Our outstanding educators work tirelessly to provide a sound education for all of our students. We will continue to work to give those students a world-class education to the best of our abilities. Please take time to view my Weekly Video message which is accessible from the ELCS website main page. Important information, kudos and reminders are shared on a weekly basis starting in September about all of the great activities taking place at ELCS. If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please don't hesitate to contact me so I may address them with you. Thank you again for taking the time to visit ELCS! Kenneth I.
